Today was a heartfelt day. I woke up from a nightmare, around 10. I laid there trying to remember what it was but just got the feeling of being chased. This is the second day in a row I have woken up from a nightmare. When I wake up it takes me awhile to come out of a fog. This morning hubby woke up just a short time before me and was taking his morning constitutional. When he was done, he made us eggs, sausage and toast. We had butter and peach jam with our toast.
After we were done, we jumped in the shower and got ready for church. Hubby wore shorts as it was rather warm out and I wore my sleeveless dress as my shorts were dirty and I can only find one pair of them. I really need to go through all my clothes and find my denim pair of shorts. And clean out my drawers of old socks, shirts that I don't wear any longer like my turtlenecks, and things too small. The stuff too small need to be put in a box in top of the closet as I am losing weight and hope to get back down to size.
Friday hubby was off so he drove me to the Zoo so I could do a shift at our exhibit Australia. We were starting to hold the baby wallaby, our joey and a bearded dragon, an Australian lizard. Bearded dragons make excellent pets. They love to be petted and are easy to take care of. I was working with another Docent, Linda Gray, as there is always 2 Docents on each shift. There are two shifts, the morning 10-1pm and the afternoon 1-4pm. Lots of Docents signed up for the morning shifts as you hold the joey from 10-11 and noon - 1pm. From 11-noon, you hold a lizard, either the bearded dragon or a blue tongue skink. Both grow up to two feet long.
There were lots of shifts available for the afternoon sessions because you only hold the joey for an hour. You hold a reptile from 1-2pm and from 3-4pm. You hold the joey from 2-3pm. I signed up for mostly afternoon shifts as I like reptiles just as much as I like the joey and, in some ways, the reptiles are more fun as you get a lot more interesting reactions from the public.
So Friday I worked the afternoon shift with Linda. It was the first day that Australia was open and the public turned out for the soft opening. The adult wallabies were exploring the exhibit, having free range throughout. One of the alligators escaped from their enclosure and was found a little later. Don't be alarmed, they are only about 3 or 4 feet long. We had some down time so got a chance to talk. It was interesting and eye opening, this first day.
Saturday I signed up to work a morning shift. I got to Base to sign in 20 minutes early and met Kay, the other Docent working. She had already gotten the padded seats and was as eager as I was to get started. We chose to sit on the bench in front of the Budgie, Budgie building. This is the new building where we have free flying parakeets, cockatrice, and finches. They sell sticks with peanut butter and bird seed attached. The birds will land on your stick to eat the treat. The bench outside is under an overhang so we wouldn't be sitting out in the sun and we will stay cooler. I have to start putting on my sunscreen to protect myself from the inadvertent rays.
Working a shift holding the joey Saturday got me out of going to the joint meeting of the Docents. It was a potluck and, frankly, I didn't have the money to make a dish to take. So I decided to do this instead. The Docents take turns holding the animal and the one who wasn't gave out hand sanitizer.
After we were done with the Zoo on Saturday, hubby brought me home and we realxed. Then hubby saw a post from Frank, our old roommate, that he was alone and sad. I told hubby it was ok to go get him and bring him home for dinner. Hubby was making my Hearty Chicken Casserole and there would be plenty of food. Hubby and Frank spent the evening laughing and watching old Dr Who reruns on Netflix. I spent the evenings with my rats.
Today I fed and watered the rats but gave them a break from socializing with me. It won't hurt them to go one day without cleaning their cage. I cut a new towel for their cage and changed out the old ones so they would be fresh yesterday. Zeke and Dylan spent the day running around and eating. I am still trying to get the amount to feed them right and I think I am still overfeeding them. This afternoon after church hubby and I dropped off books at the library and then took the pet bedding that the rats didn't like back to PetSmart. Hubby was nervous about returning it as we had opened it and told them our rats were allergic to it. I told them the truth, that the rats hated it and pushed it out of the cage and they still had no problem taking it back and exchanging it for other products. I got a different kind of rat food and a hammock for the rats. I'm hoping they will like to sleep in it. Tomorrow I will be cleaning out their cage and putting up the hammock for them. Then I will take them out for some free range time in the bathroom with me.
