Today was a sanctuary day. I woke up before hubby this morning. I heard Hot Dog meowing out front so I looked down and he was on my front porch. I knew there would be no food left, as it was all eaten last night so I went downstairs and got some. I opened the door and stepped out, bringing the cup of dry cat food with me. I poured it into the bowl and sat down. Hot Dog is a stray cat that my neighbor Janice feeds every day, but usually a little later. Sometimes he comes over to my house for food but the first time he showed up over here, it was raining and they weren't home. So I went outside and sat on the porch under the overhang where it was dry and encouraged him to come up. He came up and wanted companionship. I sat with him for about half an hour, until the rain stopped and he had eaten. Then he wandered away.
This morning he was more interested in just having me come out and sit with him. I figured Janice was still sleeping, it was around 8am, and didn't have the back door open yet. During the day, she opens the back door and Hot Dog goes in the house and lays on the couch. She feeds him hot dogs and cheese. And canned cat food and water. She bought some toys for him and lets him just exist in the house. Sometimes he wants affection but sometimes he will claw and scratch if you touch a sore spot or he is caught off guard. He hasn't done that to me yet but I don't see him all that often.
So since that night hubby and I have been putting out dry cat food to feed him, our cat DeWan, who has decided to become an outdoor cat for the summer, and the skunks. We saw a skunk that was young, maybe a yearling, eating out on our porch, so we kept on feeding it. Now we have 3 baby skunks that are coming out about 8 or 9 at night and eating. We fill up the bowl again before we go to bed for the night.
Tonight we saw again that the pair of baby skunks on the porch, that one was eating and fighting off the other one who was hungry too, so we got another bowl of food and went and jiggled the door handle, scaring them off, and placed a second bowl of food down so the other baby could eat at the same time. Our neighbors would have a cow if they knew we were feeding the skunks! So we don't tell them.
I spent the rest of the morning eating yogurt and reading back in bed. Then I got up, dressed and fed the beasties. The rattie boys were sleeping but I changed their cage and woke them up. They do love a clean cage. Then I wrote a letter to my nephew in prison, talked to my mom and played with the dogs.
So went my day. Hubby got home around 9 and Frank got home about the same time. Hubby said he isn't going to Denver tomorrow so I 'm going to take the car and go grocery shopping in the morning.
